TL;DR
Public chains are pseudonymous, not private. Every transaction is permanent and clusterable. Tornado Cash — crypto’s best-known mixer — still sees 34.7% of transactions linked by address-reuse + timing heuristics, exposing $2.3B. One address reuse can collapse an entire cluster. Privacy on transparent chains is a discipline, not a setting.
| LEAK | HOW IT HAPPENS | FIX |
|---|---|---|
| Address reuse | Same deposit/withdraw address links mixer flows | Fresh address per action. Never reuse across contexts. |
| Timing correlation | Deposit then withdraw minutes later → FIFO match | Delay + randomize. Separate funding and spending. |
| Amount fingerprint | Unique amount traces across hops | Round, split, or use fixed denominations. |
| CEX deposit link | Multiple wallets → same CEX deposit addr = same person | One wallet per identity. Isolate exchanges. |
| Gas / IP metadata | Gas price, IP, timing link wallets and real identity | Relay-aware flows. VPN/Tor for coordination. |
| NSFW / public posting | Address published → entire history de-anonymized | Never publish savings addresses. Use fresh ones. |
Tutela’s research found 42.8K of 97.3K Tornado Cash deposits potentially compromised, cutting the true anonymity set by ~37% on average. The cross-chain follow-up adds a FIFO (first-in-first-out) temporal matcher that lifts linkability another 15–22 points. The lesson is not “mixers don’t work.” It is: cryptographic guarantees erode with ordinary behavior — reuse, timing, and amount uniqueness do the deanonymizing, not a broken proof.
Practical OPSEC starts with compartmentalization: one wallet per identity (trading, DAO, savings, airdrop hunting), fresh addresses per purpose, and never funding a “private” wallet directly from a known one. For network privacy: assume explorers, RPCs, and APIs see your IP + address together unless you route through privacy-aware infrastructure. Coordination (docs, calls, DMs) leaks as much as chain data — separate the two.
Zero-knowledge and shielded pools are the structural answer, but they only hold when behavior holds. Use fixed denominations, deposit from clean sources, wait, withdraw to fresh addresses, and spend from those — not from the deposit wallet. If you must reuse, assume the cluster is public. Because it is.
A common misconception is that pseudonymity guarantees privacy. The reality is almost the opposite — every transaction reveals information about identity.

THE PRIVACY RULE THAT SAVES EVERYTHING
Never let two identities touch. If the same wallet funds two contexts, they are one identity to any analyst. Fresh wallet per context, funded via privacy-aware paths, is the entire game. Everything else is optimization.
DEFENSE CHECKLIST — MODULE 05
[01] One wallet per identity. Fresh address per action. No reuse, no exceptions.
[02] Fund private flows from clean sources. Never direct-fund from a KYC wallet.
[03] Delay + randomize mixer use. Fixed denominations. Fresh withdraw addresses.
[04] Route sensitive coordination via VPN/Tor. Separate social graph from chain graph.
[05] Assume every address you publish de-anonymizes your whole history. Publish throwaways.
